Starting An Affiliate Marketing Business
When I talk about starting an affiliate marketing business, I am referring to a business you would run on your own. It is not an MLM or network marketing company. You are an affiliate, earning a commission for promoting or selling another company’s products.
The most popular affiliate relationship out there is Amazon. If you refer someone to Amazon to buy a book, you get a commission if they buy through your link. Amazon is great, and I am an affiliate of theirs, but their commissions are generally 2-10%, depending on what your promoting and how the customer buys.
Another popular affiliate company out there is Clickbank. They have primarily ebooks, how-to ebooks, and software programs. With Clickbank, all products are for immediate download, giving the customer immediate access to their purchase. Their commissions are much more generous and average about 50%, and can easily be 75%.
Another popular affiliate relationship exists with Google, in their Adsense program. You place the piece of code they give you on your website, and if a visitor clicks on one of the ads, you get a commission. Pretty easy. Visitors comes. Clicks on a link. You get paid. While the commission rate is not disclosed, it is somewhere between 40-55%.
How To Become An Affiliate Marketer
If you are going to start an affiliate marketing business, that means that you are going to be getting into the search engine marketing game in one way or another. You are going to have to build a website that reviews, promotes, talks about, video produces, or otherwise highlights a product from one of these companies so you can get paid.
Don’t believe in the “Build a website and they will come” idea. You can build a site, but among the thousands, millions, and billions of web pages out there, yours will never be found if you do not take the necessary steps to getting your site ranked or promoted so it can be found when someone does a search.
For example, if someone is wanting research “how to lose weight,” you would need to take the necessary steps to get your site ranked high enough so it could be found. Now, I would recommend a less competitive market than weight loss… at least until you have a little experience under your belt.
However, using the weight loss example, you could build a wordpress blog around the idea of weight loss (there are many different diets and programs in which you could approach this), and write posts and articles on your blog to give sufficient content to your site. You will then need to pick one to three products on Clickbank to promote, maybe doing a review of the three CB products, and then place some of the Adsense code on some of the pages of your site too.
You would get a commission every time someone clicked on an Adsense ad, and every time someone purchased one your CB products.
My Recommendation
That is a simple explanation, and the reality is more difficult than that because of the time, effort, and strategy it takes, especially in more competitive markets. But, is it worth it? Most definitely. I have been working at home full time since 2003 as an affiliate. It is how I earn my living, create my lifestyle and find my financial freedom. My story is small compared to some who make $100K per month, $500K per month, or more, but I have been my own boss now for more than 8 years.
Starting an affiliate marketing business may be one of the best choices you’ve ever made. The affiliate marketing world is huge. You haven’t missed the boat. Just find your corner of the world and you can see why so many others have found their life in affiliate marketing as well.
