A Shaklee Review

Shaklee is one of those MLM companies that has been around almost as long as MLM itself. I believe they were founded about 1956, so that would make them over 55 years old. They have been a Fortune 500 company and have about 750,000 distributors worldwide.  They are a HUGE company.

If you review our list of Top 20 MLM Companies, you will currently find them at #19 at the time of this writing. Being in the top 20 is no small thing. I have people contacting me all the time about why their company is not listed, or that the criteria I use is not adequate. But, with the ranking system I use, which is as objective as I can do. Their Alexa ranking is currently 71,159 worldwide, and 12,309 for the United States. What that means is that they are one of the top 12,000 websites in America. That translates into a ton of traffic.

Products

So, what products does Shaklee have, and what makes them so popular? Shaklee is essentially a nutrition company. They have nutrition that breaks down into 4 categories:

  1. Nutrition products and supplements - They have supplements to cover everything for adults and children
  2. Weight Loss – They have products for weight loss and weight management
  3. Beauty – They have skin, body, and hair care products
  4. Home – They have cleaning, laundry, and water filter products

As I have mentioned in other places, most Network Marketing companies produce superior products than what you can find on the store shelves at a local department store. Shaklee has been recognized for their excellent products, purity, and quality. Even if you don’t sell the stuff, it’s probably good stuff to use for yourself.

If you are looking at Shaklee as a business opportunity, and are wondering about the quality of the products you would represent – these are among the best. They spend millions on research and development, and produce a quality product that you would be proud to represent.

Shaklee is one of those companies, that once you are in the company, begin using their products, interact with the company, attend a local meeting or annual convention, you become very loyal. Shaklee distributors are among the more loyal of all MLM companies.

Compensation Plan

Shaklee revised their comp plan about two years ago. It is a decent plan, and I’m sure any Shaklee distributor will tell you it is the best plan among all companies.  Well… it’s nice, but isn’t exactly going to light the world on fire either.

Here’s my main complaint… it’s a heavy hitter company. The average person out there who recruits a few, builds an organization of a couple dozen people, really isn’t going to see life changing income. Also, it’s not obvious how you even make money. Yes, you make money by recruiting, building a team, and building up sales volume, but, for a new person, I think it’s easy to get lost.

If you’re going to join Shaklee, make sure you know exactly what you need to do to make money. While everyone wants a downline with hundreds and hundreds of people, the reality is less than that for most people, which means the money, hopefully, will allow them to break even.

What is the Potential for New Distributors?

My last paragraph kind of summed up my opinion on what kind of potential I think there is, but let me give you my opinion beyond the numbers, the age of the company, the money spent on R&D, etc.

Shaklee is the perfect company for a person who does not want much risk. It’s the same reason that a person would invest in government bonds. Low risk. If you are the kind of person that wants a safe business to invest in, quality products, a chance to make money as you share your business over the next several months and years, then I would encourage you to take the step and join. It’s about $300 to get started right.

For the rest of the world that wants something more, I see Shaklee as a “vanilla” company. I don’t see much sizzle. I don’t see much that is exciting. I don’t see a wave of younger generation entreprenuers jumping on board. I don’t see a company that is going to push the limits and is blazing new trails. I’m sure they once did, but not any longer. While this may not sit well with current distributors, that’s my opinion as I look at the company.

http://www.shaklee.com - review the company, their history, their compensation plan, and their products.

As I always say, stay away from all of those web sites that talk about scam or “is it legit” type sites. Those are worthless sites and the guy who put those scam sites together is probably the guy who has been stocking shelves at Walmart during the 3rd shift for the last 15 years. Don’t take advice from a Walmart stockboy. Do your own research and don’t get caught in the trap of the gossip sites.

Do we endorse Shaklee? Yes, one thumb up. A solid, safe company. A great company if you like vanilla.

One, Two or Three MLM’s??

About 15 years ago and beyond, when someone joined an MLM company and launched their own home-based business… that was it. That was your business. You focused 100% of your energy on that one business… Amway, Avon, Shaklee, or whatever.

Then, in the late 1990′s, a trend began to develop of joing a second MLM, thus creating a “secondary stream of income.” People would join multiple MLM’s that didn’t conflict with each other.

For some people this little trend worked, but for most people, it just about killed any notion of making any money at all. There is a proverb that goes like this:

“The man who chases two rabbits will catch none.”

I know people who joined 2, 3, 4, or more companies. I’m not sure they ever made enough to break even in any of them.

Part of this was the Internet. People thought it would be so easy to just grow businesses left and right, and before long, thousands of dollars would come pouring in from all directions.

That trend began to fade around 2007-08.

In fact, some companies began to enforce some of their terms of service or policies that actually stated you could not join another company and work their company. I know of some top earners in Melaleuca and other companies who got canned because they broke this policy. It wasn’t the company’s fault. The associates knew this, but got greedy and sloppy, and lost it all.

But, there were greater reasons. The economy turned south and people had to trim the fat because there was less money to waste on non-producing companies. People just go tired of this whole “multiple streams of income” crap.

People also got smart (finally) that it was more than a waste of money to have 4 different MLM’s they were a part of. It was also a waste of their time. So much time is wasted switching back and forth between one business to another. It confuses new prospects and they end up feeling like they’re getting the shaft.

But…

…still, I know of some who have pulled it off. I have a couple of friends who are making solid 4-figure incomes from each of their businesses. I have one friend who is making close to 6-figures a month between 5 companies.

They are the exception, and they do not build their businesses in the same way all of these others have done and failed. Many of them build each business separately using methods that very few know how to use, or at least use effectively.

Bottom Line

So, what’s your take?

Do you focus 100% of your energy with one company? 100% of your money, marketing, and effort? Build one large organization.

Or, do you work 2 companies, or even 3? Do you think it is diversifying your income and being smarter with your future?

I would be curious to your thoughts and/or experience.  Leave a comment.

Where’s Your Home Business Going in 2012?

Okay, we are now about 2 weeks into the new year… so how ya doing?

Do you have “real” plans on taking steps foward, growing your business, charging up your downline, increasing your business volume?

Or, if you’re like most network marketers, you drive in your car or lie in bed at night and just dream of what it would be like… but those dreams never really pan out. They’re like day dreams or wishes.

How can 2 people start the same year, 2012, make it through the full year, and yet one is no farther along that he was when the year started, and the other has seen exponential growth. Their monthly commission checks are growing and growing and growing???

Let me give you an analogy. Last year in January I stepped on the bathroom scale and I weighed in at about 300 lbs!!! Yikes! I was unhealthy, fat, and heading south. I had to make a change.

For too many years I drove in the car or lay in bed at night dreaming of a leaner me. But nothing ever changed.

Until last January 2010.

I made a decision I had to change. I started on Weight Watchers. I began walking and hiking. And then, I began to run.

But I did this all with a goal. In January 2010 I bought a Runners World magazine. In that magazine was an advertisement for the San Antonio Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon. That was my goal.

I had not run in years, and I was about 100 pounds over weight. I formulated a plan.

I was going to use Weight Watchers as my vehicle for losing weight, relearning how to eat with better portion sizes and smarter food choices. It worked. Over the course of the year, I lost 53 pounds. I am still on that journey with new goals as 2012 gets started.

I began walking and hiking for 9 weeks to get some muscle built up in my legs. Then, on April 1st I began running. I could only run for 2 minutes, and then walk 2 minutes. I thought I was gonna die. But, that 2 minutes became 3, then 4, then 6, then 10, then 20, then, by Memorial Day I had reached the 5K distance (3.1 miles.).

I ran my first 5K in 31:52. I ran another 5K in June at 29:07. I began building up my distance, and then ran a 10K in September. I began stretching myself, until finally, on November 13, 2011, I ran the San Antonio Half Marathon in 2 hours 15 minutes.

I stopped dreaming and wishing, and made a decision. I then made a plan and followed it through. It was tough. I had to relearn many things. Running wasn’t always easy, but from April to December I logged about 425 miles.

Listen, if a fat tub of goo like I was, can drop 53 pounds and run a half marathon, you can do anything you want.

It all starts with a decision. That decision must be followed by a plan of action that will take you on a journey.

By the end of the year, you will look in the mirror and see a totally new and different person than what you see in the mirror now.

Go do something HUGE!!

33 Minutes To A New Business

I’ve included a video below that is really quite powerful in the world of affiliate marketing. Starting an affiliate marketing business is one of the hottest trends right now in the world of online marketing.

But, what is affiliate marketing, and how is it different than MLM?

When I talk about starting an affiliate marketing business, I am referring to a business you would run on your own. It is not an MLM or network marketing company. There are no uplines, downlines, multi-levels, or anything. You are an affiliate, earning a commission for promoting or selling another company’s products.

You sink or swim on your own efforts, not waiting on whether your downline is going to do something. Don’t misunderstand that. You can create websites and other online presence that can and will produce passive income streams to use as leverage.

So, watch the video below. It’s about an affiliate training program called Bring The Fresh. It’s 33 minutes long. It’s not a short YouTube video. 33 minutes to something bigger and better. Go grab some popcorn, a drink, and a pad of paper. This stuff is good.

MLM Company Reviews

I am trying to do 2-3 reviews per month of different MLM companies. Whether it is a long time company like Amway, or a new network marketing company of some kind, we are trying to do reviews that someone can get a quick overview to see if it is worth further investigation.

We try to provide:

  • Company history and leadership
  • MLM products
  • MLM compensation plan overview
  • If it is a viable business to build
  • My personal opinion on whether it is a good opportunity or not

I am not personally involved in any network marketing, MLM, or incorporated affiliate company. Therefore, I am not going to give you the ole switcheroo, like some review sites, where they tell you all that is wrong with one company so they can build up and promote their company. So, I have nothing to win, gain, or lose by doing a company review.

I love the network marketing/home business industry. I am involved within it, as a leads company owner. I have been involved with a couple of network marketing companies in the past, but it has been several years. I speak with networkers from various companies every week and have gotten to know the leaders of some of the best… and some of the more questionable companies.

As the owner of National-Leads.com, I manage this blog to give an overview of the home business industry… but my real love is MLM. I use that term synonomously with network marketing and referral marketing. So, if you claim that you are not an MLM (like the Melaleuca folks), but you operate in a similar fashion with an upline, downline, commissions, etc…. I’ve lumped you all into the same category.

Here’s My Big Question

Here’s my big question – I don’t want to just do the company reviews of the companies I think are worth while, that I know something about, or that grab my attention. I would rather do company reviews of the companies the readers of this blog are intersted in. So, if you want me to do a review of a specific company, just leave a comment below with the name of the company, and I will give it my best shot.

Thanks for taking the time to visit MLMTop200.com, and best wishes with your business!!
